Contemporary Art
Bernard Villemot, born September 20, 1911 in Trouville-sur-Mer (Calvados) and died in 1989.
Bernard Villemot is the finest French posterist of the past thirty years. Although the widespread use of photo lithography and the reduced role of the poster resulted in fewer distinguished posters since World War II, Villemot has been a notable exception.
Colorful, clever and cheerful, Villemot's posters have been one of the joys of visiting Paris the last few years. Villemot's strenth lies in his ability to reduce all messages to simple lines and bold colors, combined with an engaging and irresistible charm.
Villemot won every award in his field including the prestigious Martini Gold Medal. His work was exhibited in retrospectives at the Musee de Arts Decoratifs in Paris in 1966 and at the Biblioteheque in Paris in 1981.
